Clos Pons Nits de Boira 2018
Spain’s northeastern knuckle, like its iconic city of Barcelona, is as French as it is Spanish––and home to a culture, cuisine, and personality all its own. From delightful Cava, Spain’s sparkling wine (95 percent of which is produced in this region), to exciting red blends from Emporda, Catalunya offers excellent diversity. The varied geography of the region helps as well. Penedes, Catalunya’s most important DO, is hilly and cool, and well suited for Cava production, but in its hotter sections international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay do well. The higher-altitude Montsant region has focused, dense reds, while the warmer Terra Alta region is has limestone and clay soils that are also well suited to dry reds. The principal Cava grapes, Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada, are widely planted here, but Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Cabernet can be found in abundance throughout the region.
